How Much Rebar Do I Need? How Quantities Get Taken Off

Quantity comes from the drawings, not from a rule of thumb. What a takeoff includes, the parts that get missed, and why the tonnage is only half of what a number has to say.

On a commercial job the honest answer is: exactly what the structural drawings call for, plus laps, plus accessories, plus waste. Anyone quoting a rule of thumb is guessing at the largest line item in the package.

Rules of thumb exist — pounds per cubic yard of concrete, pounds per square foot of slab — and they have exactly one legitimate use: a sanity check on a number arrived at some other way. They are useless as an estimate because the ratio they express varies by a factor of several between a lightly reinforced slab and a transfer element, and because the parts of a package most likely to be missed are the parts a ratio cannot see.

What a takeoff includes

The arithmetic

The mechanics are simple enough to describe in a sentence and tedious enough that nobody does them twice. For each element: count the bars, establish each bar's total length including hooks, bends and any embedment beyond the element, add the lap where the run requires one, multiply the total linear feet of each bar size by its weight per foot, and sum.

Total by size, not just in aggregate. A package totalling forty tons made up mostly of #5 and a package totalling forty tons made up mostly of #9 are different jobs — different piece counts, different tie counts, different handling, different crew. A bid built on tonnage alone has thrown away the information that distinguishes them.

Laps are not a rounding error

Lap splices deserve their own line because they are the most commonly underestimated item in the whole exercise.

A lap adds its full length of bar, at every splice, in every run — and lap length is a multiple of bar diameter that rises with grade, falls with concrete strength, and increases again for coated bar and for bar near the top of a deep pour. On a long wall or a large mat with many splices, the laps are a meaningful fraction of the tonnage, not a contingency item.

They also change if the design changes. A revision that raises a bar size or lowers a concrete strength lengthens every lap in that element, and the tonnage moves with it.

The parts that get missed

Dowels and starter bars at construction joints, corner bars, additional bar at openings, and the extra steel called out in a detail rather than in the schedule. These are the items that turn up as a change order once the crew is on site.

Congestion is the other one. It does not change the quantity, but it changes how long the quantity takes to place — and a bid that priced the tonnage without reading the congestion is a bid that will hurt somebody.

The pattern behind the first list is worth naming: steel that lives in a detail rather than in a schedule is the steel that gets missed. A bar schedule is a table and it is easy to total. A note on a section saying "provide 2-#5 × 4'-0" each face at all openings" is prose, it appears once, and it may govern forty openings across a building.

The same applies to dowels at construction joints, which belong to the placement sequence rather than to any single element, and to corner and edge bars in walls and slabs, which are drawn in a typical detail and appear nowhere in a count.

Congestion, and the second half of the number

A takeoff that produces only a weight has answered half the question. The other half is how long it takes to place, and that varies enormously: an open slab mat is fast, a congested column-to-beam joint or a transfer element is slow in a way that is invisible in the tonnage.

This is why reading every element during the takeoff matters more than the total it produces, and it is the argument for a reinforcement contractor doing their own rather than pricing somebody else's.

Accessories, and the quantity nobody sees

Chairs, bolsters, spacers and tie wire are not reinforcement, they are how reinforcement stays where it was put. They are also the line most often carried as a percentage allowance rather than a counted quantity, which is how they get trimmed when a bid gets tight.

The consequence is not commercial, it is structural: supports are the mechanism by which specified cover becomes achieved cover. A mat with too few chairs sags between them, and the cover lost is permanent the moment concrete arrives. On a deck or a large mat this is real money — tens of thousands of chairs on a big industrial floor — and it is money that buys service life.

Why we do our own

When a reinforcement contractor takes off the job themselves, they read every element in the process. That is why conflicts get found in the estimate rather than on the deck, and it is the cheapest place a conflict can possibly be found.

That is the real product of a takeoff, and it is the reason it is worth paying for rather than inheriting. Somebody reading every element to count it is also somebody noticing that a bend radius is impossible at that bar size, that a lap lands where there is no room for it, that two details contradict each other, or that a mat foundation is congested enough to need a conversation before it is fabricated.

None of those findings are in the tonnage. All of them are in the reading.

What to ask for with a quantity

If you are given a reinforcement quantity — by an estimator, a supplier or a contractor — the questions that make it usable are short.

Is it broken down by bar size, or only totalled? Are laps included, and at what lengths? Are accessories counted or carried as a percentage? Which drawing revision was it taken off? And what did the person doing it flag while they were reading?

That last question is the one that separates a number from an estimate. If you want a set read properly rather than totalled, that is a conversation worth having.
