Challenge

The lane closure sets the pour date

Work over a live interstate happens inside a window the public has been told about. The steel is either tied, inspected and signed off when the concrete arrives, or the closure is wasted.

Approach

Tied and inspected ahead of the window

Deck mats and substructure cages built to MoDOT detail with cover and spacing verified early, so the inspector's walk was a formality rather than a discovery.

Outcome

Every pour hit its date

A 1962 structure replaced on an accelerated schedule, with traffic maintained and no closure given back for rework.

The job

MoDOT's Northwest District needed to replace the Gene Field Road bridge over Interstate 29 in St. Joseph — a 1962 structure carrying roughly 6,500 vehicles a day.

Clarkson Construction Company held the contract. The work happened above a live interstate, which changes the arithmetic of everything: access is limited, laydown is limited, and the concrete comes when the traffic control plan says it can.

Reinforcing a bridge deck under those conditions means the pour date is fixed by the closure, not by the crew. Our job was to make sure the steel was never the variable.

How it ran

01

Substructure

Footing, column and cap reinforcement built to MoDOT detail, with bar bent and delivered to suit the limited laydown alongside the interstate.

02

Approach slabs

Approach reinforcement staged so the tie-in work never conflicted with the deck sequence or the traffic control phase in force that week.

03

Deck mats

Top and bottom mats tied with cover held to spec, chairs checked, and the pre-pour walk completed before the closure window opened.

04

Pour support

Crew on the deck through the pour for spacing and cover watch, then documentation handed to the district for the structure's record.

Over a live interstate the closure is the deadline. Steel that is tied and signed off early is the only way a pour date survives contact with the schedule.
